Um leitor comentou, a propósito do meu post anterior que analisava a insinuação de Jordan Peterson sobre o Google manipular o seu algoritmo segundo uma determinada agenda política, que quando se procura "couple" no Google Images, o resultado é um sem número de imagens de casais brancos, jovens e heterossexuais. Sobre a tal "agenda política" do Google, está tudo dito.

Outro leitor informou-me que no Quora alguém se deu ao trabalho de responder a essa insinuação. Copiei a sua explicação para o fim deste post. Leiam até ao fim, que vale a pena.

É assim este mundo em que vivemos: embora o Google se limite a apresentar aquilo que é mais procurado - e aparentemente o que é mais procurado quando se procura "casal" é um casal branco, jovem e heterossexual - o Jordan Peterson consegue pôr a correr uma teoria de conspiração de que o marxismo está a invadir as cabeças e os algoritmos, mudando as relações de poder a favor das minorias.
(Provavelmente ele vai dizer que não disse isto, porque a sua especialidade é escapar por entre os pingos da chuva, mas pronto. Se ele disser que não disse, alguém faça o favor de lhe perguntar o que queria dizer exactamente quando chamou a atenção para a tal manipulação do algoritmo do Google.) (Ah, claro, como pude esquecer? Ele vai responder que podemos ver um vídeo seu de duas horas no qual explica muito bem o que queria dizer com isso...)

Google Image Search works by analysis of textual clues found within image tags and file names and also in surrounding text on the web page. The search algorithm doesn't have the ability to actually “know” with certainty what is in an image.

You can see the artifact of “close, but not quite right” play out in a myriad of examples. In fact, I would venture to say that most image search results are typically more wrong than right. This is because the quality of relevance signals for image subject matter are relatively weak.

So if you do a search for [white couples] and you get a mixture of white and non-white couples, you ought to be happy to have found images that matched your query even if some of the image results did not.

Edit: I just went to Google Image search to double check what you were seeing. I noticed the inter-racial couples you spoke of in your original post. The answer is simple. In many cases, the title of the image was “Black and White Couples” (or something like that). Your search of “white couples” is a strong match for half of that title. It is therefore not surprising that these results are showing up in your search for white couples.

EDIT: I closed comments because I originally understood the intent of the question to be a legitimate question about the image search algorithm. Turns out the question is the focus of a conspiracy theory. To those who believe that Google has an agenda they are pushing through their subtle manipulation of the image search algorithm to sneak some interracial couples for the infinitesimally small number of image search queries for [white couples], you’ll be much happier at Reddit.
