this land is my land

O correio transatlântico anda muito activo nestes dias. Até parece que estamos todos na mesma onda...

De Los Angeles chega-me um trocadilho fantástico:
"We've gone from an ABOMINATION to an Obama Nation."

A amiga que me enviou este link teve o cuidado de avisar que lá pelo minuto 3:28 aparece o Obama.

De destacar também alguns dos comentários ao vídeo:

* Wow! I've heard Pete Seeger sing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before, but always in protest. What a joy to hear him sing on THIS day in celebration! thanks so much for posting this.

* Maybe my most favorite video of all time. From Guthrie to Seeger to Springsteen ... the torch is passed. Think of the history of all the speeches and songs at the Lincoln Memorial - the torch is passed. And to us American, ALL of us ... the torch is passed. Democracy isn't just voting, it's working to make a just, equitable, shared society. Maybe this is a decade we will get it right.God bless you, Pete. Live long and prosper! You have done so much for us.

* Thanks for this comment. It sums up my feelings upon seeing this video also. This is a special moment in history. What better place to sing Woody's song than the Lincoln Memorial. And what better person to lead than the patriarch of progressive American folk music, Pete Seeger, who has inspired generations around the world to work for peace and justice for all. May we all carry the torch forward. Thank you and the person who posted this clip.

* Pete Seeger is a uniter, not a divider. We need more uniters in this wicked world.

* It is so, so fitting that Pete was there yesterday. He was deep in the trenches during the civil rights movement. What happens tomorrow will fulfill what he fought so much for 40 years ago. God bless him.

* Pete Seeger is as much of a part of the struggle for equality as M L King, and all the other greats that paved for the way for this great event. I am happy that he has lived to see this. He should be allowed front and center for the occasion. I have been waiting for over forty years for a President that I could truly trust, and support once again. That day has come. I guess it just goes to show you, that sometimes the good guys do win!

* This is what the fucking USA is all about!!! George Bush could never understand patriotism like this.

* You know, I notice Free Republic sticking to their predictable fascism in response to this performance. They seem to think it's so much more crucial that people know they consider Pete and Bruce communists, than that they're aware these two love the freedom that this country stands for sooooooo much that they're singing this particular "I love America" song, and right before "America the Beautiful" no less! Amen.

* This is one of the most moving and deeply beautiful moments I have ever seen in the history of music. Those same steps, where Marian Anderson sang in 1939 because the Daughters of the "American" Revolution wouldn't let her sing in their facility because she was black; those same steps where, in 1963, Martin spoke those deathless words about the real American dream, where "We Shall Overcome" was sung; and now, with half a million singing along, the song that ought to be our national anthem. USA!

* A true American Hero. Pete was imprisoned by the HUAAC, for refusing to testify. he was a2nd class citizen in his own country. This appearance on Sunday is another sign that things are changing for the better in America this week.

* I never thought I would ever see Pete Seeger singing the most viciously omitted verses of what should be our official national anthem to close the inauguration of a black president...and I'm only 23.This broadcast, with woody's damn near sacred words, was broadcast over those same hated corporations that cause the poverty which Woody wrote about. I think we cana ctually work with President Obama...

* One cant help but smile when one remembers that Pete Seeger went up before the House of Un American activities, was black listed ..and 50 years later they're all dead, and he's playing Woody Guthrie songs in front of the Lincoln Memorial for an African American president.
